  • Rationale for Course Changes

We wish to replace AE 495 (Applied Research & Evaluation) with a course focused on program planning and development (PPD), a decision we've arrived to after piloting PPD curriculum in 495 the last two years.

Before we started piloting PPD content in AE 495, the course was solely a research and evaluation methods course, built off ES 495 (which AE students use to take).

Most AE 495 students, with a few exceptions, found the content (research methods), empirical research project, and five-chapter report (which we carried into AE 496) impractical and irrelevant to the work they wished to pursue upon graduation (even while many of them executed successful research projects).

In considering ways to infuse the course with more relevant and practical content, we analyzed the requirements of AE-related degree programs at other institutions and polled alumni and graduating seniors (using surveys, focus groups, and questionnaires) on their experiences in AE 495-496 and for their opinions about, and preferences for, other subjects (in the core curriculum).

The results of these inquiries repeatedly pointed to the need for a program planning course and to do away with the traditional (empirical) senior research project altogether. (The results of one survey are attached.)

At the same time, we propose retaining some AE 495 content, particularly material on program evaluation, needs assessments, and evidence-based decision making.

*Required only for new courses A needs assessment explaining why the course is being proposed.

For new courses, enter the course number as a generic number with the level desired, example: 1XX, 2XX, 3XX, 4XX. Masters level numbering 6XX, 7XX. The Registrar's Office will indicate available numbers during the Impact Study step. Does the number reflect the level of the course (lower division, upper division)?

    Program Planning & Development
List the full title here for the catalog. Title should properly reflect the content of the course. Note: Title will be abbreviated to 30 characters in student records.
  • Rigor and Guidelines on Course Levels: Describe how this course is at the appropriate level of rigor for the level proposed (see Policy on Rigor and Guidelines on Course Level for examples of evidence and criteria for course levels.)

    Course Number
Course numbering is based on the contents of the material presented in courses.
    001-099 Remedial
    100-199 Primarily for Freshmen
200-299 Primarily for Freshmen and Sophomores
300-499 Primarily for Juniors and Seniors
    600-799 Exclusively for Graduate students
    1100-1799 Physical Education (PE) activities

Courses numbered below 100 do not count towards graduation. Courses numbered 100-299 are called lower division courses, while those 300 or above are known as upper division courses. Courses numbered 600-799 are graduate courses.

  • Minimum criteria for course level designations
  • Describe how this course is at the appropriate level of rigor for the level proposed (see Policy on Rigor and Guidelines on Course Level for examples of evidence and criteria for course levels.)*

I propose including a "rigor statement" in the syllabus, which will state something like the following:

"Courses at the 400-level, like AE 475, require students to synthesize advanced knowledge and engage in independent production. Put differently, this course will require you to integrate knowledge, skills, and attitudes developed in earlier courses with the content covered in AE 475, and apply it to the primary project in this course: the development of a comprehensive program plan (hypothetical or real). Moreover, it will be a difficult course in terms of the amount and kind of work required. Lastly, you cannot progress to 496 (Senior Seminar) unless you pass this course with a 70% / C-."

Describe how this course is at the appropriate level of rigor for the level proposed (see Policy on Rigor and Guidelines on Course Level for examples of evidence and criteria for course levels.)
  • Catalog Description (Limit to 60 words)*

This course familiarizes students with the essential principles and components of program planning and development, while cultivating an appreciation for the important role planning plays in starting, administering, improving, and sustaining programs of all sizes. Students will plan and propose a comprehensive outdoor, experiential, or adventure education-related program that meets a clearly-defined educational, developmental, or therapeutic need or gap.

Is the description of the course (which must be 60 words or less) carefully worded to reflect the intent and content of the course?

  • How will staffing requirements be addressed?

Since we propose replacing AE 495 with this course, we're not proposing a change to the staffing status quo.

i.e. if a new course, who will teach the course and what will not be taught to accommodate this addition? If changing credits, how will that affect staffing patterns?
  • If new costs wil be incurred with this change, do you anticipate additional funding sources to mitigate any of the costs (such as student fees, grants, other)?
