Per Cheryl Nixon, these courses, originally approved as special topics, need to be launched as permanent course offerings.
This Farmer In Training program has 8 courses total and had a successful first year. The program is in its second year as a collaboration between the Old Fort and the Environment & Sustainability Department. Based on the first year (2022), the program is successful and benefits students for the following reasons:
1) an immersive and experiential summer experience that allows them to gain college credit that is stackable with the existing Regenerative Foods System Certificate.
2) provides students with a paid summer job and field work.
3) connects students with the regional farming community and off-campus community
4) supports retention by keeping students active in college courses over the summer
5) potentially creates a bridge to college for high school graduates and members of the community
6) provides students with a fun, supportive, and outdoor summer experience that builds friendships
7) prepares students for careers as farmers and for careers in food systems more generally
